Salt Lake City is the capital of Utah. The city is proof of the diligence and envisage of its early settlers. Mormons layed a very significant role in building up the city though they form less than half of the population. The residents of the city are addressed as “Salt Lakers.” The chief executive official of the city is Ross C. Anderson. On 24 th July 1847 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints inhabited Salt Lake City situated on the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake. Originally named “Great Salt Lake City” , the city became Utah's capital on 4 th January 1896.
   
 

The city is known for its ski resorts, national parks and recreational areas. The city is boundered by the lofty Wasatch Mountains which remain covered with thick snow in winters. They surround the valley and consists of the crystal like pure lakes and atreams. The tourists from all over the world visit city to avail the world-class facilities and the “greatest snow on earth.” These mountains served as the passage for the Mormon's to enter the city. There are also a multitude of activities to do in the city. The world renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir is a free concert hosted by the Historic Temple Square. To know about the heritage of the city Family History Library is worth seeing. The city named after the Great Salt Lake offers kayak and powerboat sailing.
 

The Lagoon Amusement park has to offer summer adventures. From the Rocket to Rattlesnake Rapids, the roller-coaster ride and amusement park rides etc. the Governor's house, historic homes along South Temple , the Lion House etc. also add to the charm of the city. Moreover, Salt Lake is a major downtown center and the main operating center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Mormon Tabernacle choir. The Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve is planned keeping in concern the ecological significance. It is a habitat for millions of birds. For the admirers of the birds it has a walkway path through prime bird-watching habitat. The panorama of the surrounding can also be enjoyed from a 30-foot-high tower. The Hogle Zoo and Tracy Aviary is a snuggling house for animals, birds and reptiles. Situated in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains is the University of Utah . The campus also served as the official site of the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Villages and Rice-Eccles Olympic Stadium. Salt Lake City also boasts many art galleries, museums, festivals and events.

The city is also a home of the professional sports like Utah Jazz of NBA, Salt Lake Stingers of baseball and Utah Grizzlies of hockey.
