Formerly known as New Orleans Jazz, the Utah Jazz franchise began in 1974 when a group of nine people invested $6.15 million to form the club. The Utah Jazz is a pro basketball team and one of seven teams in the Midwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association. The account of Jazz basketball holds the saga of two cities. The team derived its name, New Orleans Jazz from the musical legacy of the city of New Orleans . The Jazz in their formative years were led by guard Pete Maravich. He was considered one of the most entertaining players, though the team was unable to mark the victorious strokes. Marvarich's exceptionally good playing skills made the Jazz one of the most admired and fashionable team in the league. In 1976, even with the acquisition of Los Angeles Lakers player Elgin Baylor as head coach, the club couldn't reach the summit. In 1978-79 season, the Jazz shifted to Salt Lake City , Utah .

 


In Utah the team was led by forwards Adrian Dantley and Karl Malone and guard John Stockton. During their first three years in Utah , the club managed to average 16 wins a year. The team's general manager, Frank Layden guided the Jazz and finally they reached to the top of the Midwest Division. In 1984, the club notched its first winning season and recorded outstanding statistics. The players who lead the show were Adrian Dantley, guard Darrell Griffith, center Mark Eaton and guard Rickey Green. The magnificent duo of forward Karl Malone and guard John Stockton took the team to new heights. Though they were not associated with major college football but formed one of the most terrific pair in the history of NBA. Throughout the 80's and 90's, the Utah became one of the winning teams. Jeff Hornacek became one of the best three-point and free throw shooters in the league. The Jazz won more than 50 games in eight of nine seasons from 1988-89 through 1996-97.

 

In the recent years Jazz has won over and over again. With the assistance of high caliber players like Carlos Arroyo, Carlos Boozer. Matt Harpring, Andrei Kirilenko and Mehmet Okur, the club anticipates making it big again and again. The home stadium of the Jazz's is the Delta Center situated in the Salt Lake City . It was inaugurated in 1991 and costs around $94 million. The Delta Air Lines sponsored the naming rights. Their mascot has t he word "JAZZ" superimposed over purple and blue mountain ranges. Utah is written inside a gold ring at the top. The club wear purple and blue colored jersey.
